Three years ago I made six blanks for Celtic knot rolling pins. I finished one right away and had it at a meeting for show and tell, then gave it to one of my sisters. The other five blanks laid around the shop until a couple weeks ago when I finally finished them. Two are maple/walnut and three are maple/purpleheart. You may notice one is a smaller diameter than the others. This was due to a "design change" due to a "tool problem." There is also a picture of the tablesaw jig to cut the grooves for the inserts in the blank. The inserts were cut on the bandsaw. You cut the first slot in the blank using the jig and then use the spacer in the third picture to move the blank over for the second cut. Repeat these cuts and inserts on all four sides of the blank. I made the first prototype from a piece of scrap cedar with maple inserts and then cut a cross-section through it showing the pattern of the inserts inside the finished piece. The idea and instructions came from a post on lumberjocks.com
